Anyone who visited Buton island whose intention is knowing the
history, culture, and the sultanate of Buton, then Hazirun is one that must be met.
He is like a living dictionary of Buton history and culture. He resides in the Melai
village, Murhum District, Bau-Bau city of Southeast Sulawesi.
People who visit him does not come only from domestic but also
from foreign countries such as Japan, the Netherlands, the United States, and
south Korean. Buton sultanate, established in 1540 to 1960, is a maritime
empire that controlled the island of Buton and the surrounding islands in the
southern of south east Sulawesi.
His grandfather titled “Bontona-gundu-gundu” is one of the members of Sio Limbona, “the highest councils of Buton sultanate” which owns right in appointing and dismissing sultan. Hazirun has countless of history books and copies of ancient manuscripts of Buton. Due to the missing of his books, he rewrites the various ancient manuscripts containing kabanti Buton (poems, rhymes, and songs) and the spiritual teaching of fiqih and Sufism.
One among others manuscript he wrote is Murtabat 7, a kind of constitution for sultanate of Buton. This script comprises 12 chapters and 21 articles which regulate in detail the procedures for governance, territory, taxation, rights and obligations of officials and the selection process of the sultan.
Buton literature, according to Hazirun, reached its glory during the reign of the 29th sultan, La Ode Muhammad Idrus, in the mid of 19th century. Also, the collection of Buton document is the third largest in the archipelago after the Malay and Javanese script.
Nowadays with all his knowledge, he hopes the younger generations
would preserve the history and culture of their ancestors, especially Buton generation,
